First and foremost I want to congratulate d this months Presidential Honour Award winner - Ross Dawe! He was nominated for his outstanding acheivement in raising over $700 from his second stall at the Group North Open Day. Ross was itching to participate in a game on the day but stayed in the trenches (behind the trestle table) to raise that money which went straight to the club and will be used to purchase new scenery.
Christmas at Group North
Christmas is almost upon us and if anyone want's to know what to get me then just think Tyranids, Tyranids or Tyranids! Group North will be celebrating Christmas on Wednesday 17th December where free food and drinks will be supplied. Those of you who can't make it on the Wednesday can come on Friday 19th December where free drinks will also be offered. This year there will be no door fees for either night so I hope to see plenty of members there.
Ross Dawe's annual Christmas-themed game using the "Hordes Of The Things" fantasy rules returns for another year of fun and mayhem! All players welcome.
Last year the Snow Queen's attack captured Santa Claus. Her goal was to prevent Santa from inducing people to spend big for Christmas, so the reduced industrial output and waste would halt the progress of global warming. The recent global financial crisis and talk of recession shows the Snow Queen's plan has worked too well!
Desperate corporate executives have come up with a plan: they have to rescue Santa Claus from the clutches of the Snow Queen. To do that, they have formed a rescue mission led by the only people who know how to enter fairy tale land: the inmates of Arkham Asylum.
Join Mary Claus, Alice, mutant turtles, bat fetishers, The Joker and their goons as they battle the Snow Queen, Frosty, Snowy, Papa Bear and the Big Bad Wolf for the fate of our economy! Christmas depends on it!
Group North will be closed on Wednesday 24th and Friday 27th December and Wednesday 31st December. The first official club night for 2009 will be Friday January 2nd.
On the Battle Report page there is dramatic tale of the carnage filled conflict between 2000pts of Space Orks and Tyranids. Its a brutish Ork horde on the rampage running headlong into the devouring maws of Hive Fleet Behemoth. Will one win over the other or will they consume each other in mutual destruction?
Wednesday 7 and 14 January, 7pm onwards both nights.
Organisers: Ross Dawe, Rowland Dickinson and Marcus Tregenza.
This DBA tournament will use 25mm figures.
There are three games on each of the two nights. Players can play just one night if they wish.
Entry is free!
Each gameboard will consist of a matched pair of armies that were historical enemies. Players will be assigned a gameboard and roll 1d6 each: high roll chooses which of the two armies for that gameboard to use. The normal DBA game sequence continues with players rolling for attacker/defender. Terrain for each gameboard will be preset by the organisers.
Players with 25/28mm scale DBA armies are welcome to bring them along so they can be used in the tournament. Ross and Marcus will be contributing armies, but we would greatly appreciate other players contributing some additional variety in the matched army pairs.
Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to all.
Simon O'Brien - President GNHWS
I don't know where to start this month as so much happened in October. There was the Open Day, the Presidents Award and our success in winning a $1500 community grant!
Open Day 2008
The Open Day this year was a great success with plenty of people attending. We had a good cross section of games systems put on by members, 3 stores selling their wares, Ross Dawe selling donated second hand items, a display of Miltary vehicles and nearly $500 in prizes given away! Check out some pics of the day in our PHOTO GALLEREY.
Kyle Jacobi accepting his door prize from Club President Simon O'Brien and a game of Warhammer run by Graeme Fazakerley.
I would like to thank everyone who helped out on the day. Whether it was putting out signs (and bringing them back in), running a display table or packing up at the end of the day. These people helped to ensure the day was a success and I didn't stress too much!
A big thanks to Ross Dawe for his idea of the second hand table as this brought in over $700 that will go straight to the club. Ross will be sending out an email to ask members for ideas on how to spend it. Thankyou you to Eureka Miniatures for coming all the way from Melbourne and donating prizes to the tattoo. A big thanks to Gamers Guild for attending their first ever Group North Open Day. I hope they will be attending next year. A special thanks to the Ange Cameron and Alison O'Brien who ran the canteen. They were very busy this year and I received a number of comments on their friendly service.
Thankyou to all those who helped out just by attending. Showing your support for the club shows others that we a have an energetic and vibrant membership and a club that will continue to grow and succeed.
City of Salisbury Community Grant
On behalf of Group North I applied for and was successful in receiving a $1500 community grant from Salisbury City Council. At the same time the Windermere Seniors who rent our Hall were successfull in also receiving a $1500 grant. Both clubs will be attending a ceremony on 18/11/2008 and will then be able to purchase $3000 worth of new chairs and tables. Many of our current chairs and tables are broken, unsafe and heavy so replaceing them will make a big difference to all of our members.
This month we have joint winners Bob Leyssenaar and his son Scott. They were nominated for attending the last three working bees and putting in a lot of hard work. They helped put up the new ceiling in the terrain room, dug ditches when the ladies toilet got blocked and did plenty of painting of tables prior to the Open Day. Congratulations Bob and Scott!
New Warhammer 40k Tournament announced for February 2009! Check out our tournaments page for full details.
Simon O'Brien - President GNHWS
The Presidential Award winner for this month is Heinz Schroeder. He was nominated for his tireless work in running the club canteen. This is not just about stocking the fridge but Heinz also has to go out and buy the stock, cart it to the club, unload it and keep accurate financial records as he goes.
Heinz puts in a lot of work just to keep the fridge stocked so we all can have a drink and some chocolate when we get down to the serious business of gaming. Congratulations Heinz!
For his prize Heinz received a couple of LotR bister packs from Games Workshop.
October Working Bee
On Saturday 11/10/2008 there is a working been to work on some of the clubs scenery. If you are able to help then come along in your painting clothes. We will be painting some of the board tables, glueing down some new trees and painting the bases of a few ruined buildings. It's not hard work so I hope to see a good turn out.
Open Day Update
The open day is THIS MONTH, on Sunday 26/10/2008. Tell your family about it, tell your friends and tell your work colleagues about it! If any one wants a colour display poster or some flyers then email me ASAP and I will get them to you.
There will be door prizes that anyone can win and there will be a tattoo with prizes that only club members can win. The following catergories can be entered into:
Best Warhammer 40k Model
Best Warhammer Fantasy Model
Best Lord of the Rings Model
Best WWII model or Unit
Best 15mm Historical Model or Unit
Best 28mm Historical Model or Unit
Space for displaying the models will be limited so please keep "unit" entries to a small size. Entires in each catergory may be limited to one entry per person. Winners will be decided by a public vote and there will also be a prize for best table display.
On a personal note I want to thank Southern Wargamers for putting on a great 40k tournament last month. It was well organised and hassle free. I had a lot of fun, met some new gamers and even managed to grab a prize for coming second. I encourage everyone to play in any clubs tournaments. We are a small community and we all need to support each other. I will definately be there next year with my Tyranids again. Go Nidzilla!
Simon O'Brien - President GNHWS
First up this month I have to congratulate Marcus Tregenza for winning the first ever Group North Presidential Honour Award! Marcus was nominated for his fine work on the "Field of Glory" write up for the website. If you haven't read it yet then I suggest you do as it's very infornmative and you will see that Marcus spent quite a bit of time on it.
Marcus received a $40 gift voucher from Eureka Miniatures for his service to Group North. Thanks again Marcus!
It's not hard to nominate someone, simply send me an email. Remember to get those nominations in by the 25th of each month.
Open Day Update
Ross Dawe has come up with an excellent way to raise some money for the club on the open day. He will be running a second hand stall and the plan is that all the money from sales at the second hand stall will go to the club. E.g. if we sell $200 of stuff, the club gets all $200.
Any wargaming related items will be gratefully accepted, including painted or unpainted miniatures, spare model bits on sprues, scenery, RPG modules, boardgames, etc. If you have finished an army and have a few models left over, this is your chance to give those models a good home and earn the club a few dollars as well.
Some of the items I already know will be on offer at the stall include:
Mage Knight prepainted plastic figures,
The new Group North club shirts have arrived!
They come in black or navy blue and are priced at only $35. We have a limited number in stock so if you are interested please pay your money to any committee member. It's first come first served but we can order more so don't worry about missing out. It may just take a little longer to get your's in.
This month sees the introduction of the “Group North Presidential Honour Award”.
I feel there a lot of members who are really contributing to the success of the club but they are getting little or no recognition for their efforts. Now every month all members will be able to expose the good deeds of their fellow gamers simply by letting their President know all about it! If you know someone who has done something that is of service or benefit to the club then it’s up to you to ensure they get the recognition they deserve.
I am looking forward to reading all the nominations each month and to top it off the winner will be awarded a prize! You can read all the details on the webpage especially set up for this award. In the coming months it’s sure to be filled with photos of our monthly winners.
Marcus Tregenza has written an introduction on the new game system “Field of Glory” that is fast growing in popularity. Whether you are old or new to historical war gaming you are sure to have a lot of fun with this updated version of historical battles. Be sure to check out Marcus’s in depth review of the game on the new "FoG" page.
The open day is fast approaching and I am still looking for a few people to put on a display or demo game. If you are interested then please let me know what you would be interested in doing. There will be a number of vendors on the day and many of them will be providing a special discount on the day. If you are interested in something special then be sure to get in contact with them so they can bring it on the day. Many of the vendors are from interstate so straight away you will be saving on postage.
Up to 20% discount on the day – cash only! Just ask for Andrew.
5% discount if ordered and paid in advance.
Contact Nic beforehand to pre order and he has promised to look after you.
Other vendors have confirmed and I will update everyone as soon as I am able.
There will also be a tattoo on the day that will be open for members only. Categories and conditions are yet to be finalised but a prize or two will definitely be there for the taking. So keep on painting!
Simon O'Brien - President GNHWS
The AGM for another year has been concluded and committee positions have been filled. Check out the photos of this years committee on the "Who we Are" page.
After the AGM our annual Tattoo was held and the following members won a prize. Many thanks to Games Workshop and Military Hobbies for helping with the prizes.
James Tregenza won the Junior section with his Tyranid Warriors.
Greg Huffa won the Character and Squad sections with his Fellow Ship of the Ring display and his Redlancers.
Simon O'Brien won the Best Vehicle/Large Creature section with his Tyranid Malanthrope.
Ross Dawe also presented a number of trophies for tournaments held during the year. Be sure to visit our "Tournament results" page for full details.
This years Northern Heresy tournament was a great success and fun was had by all. Congratulations to this years winner - Andrew Penn. I don't know about the other competitors but I killed Ork after Ork after Ork and at the end of the game the table still seemed to be full of them! My next 12 months will be spent on play testing anti Ork fighting doctrine!
Check out our "Tournament Results" page and our Photo gallery for some cool pics!
The next issue of the "Grumbler will be out soon and inside their will be a word from our new President (yours truely). I will be announcing some new developments for the club which I am sure will benefit all club members. Until then continue to enjoy your gaming and if you see an Ork player anywhere, then be sure to stomp on the pesky blighter for me!
Simon O'Brien - President GNHWS.
