Well its coming close to the end of another year and to celebrate we will be holding our usual Christmas nibbles at the clubrooms on Friday 17th December and Wednesday 22nd December. There will be no door fees on these two evenings so please come along and share in the festivities. It has been a big year for Group North and I would like to take the time to thank all of the members and the committee of Group North a very Merry Christmas and a happy and safe 2011.
40K in 40 Minutes
Owen Bartsch will be holding a 40K in 40 minutes event at the club over 2 standard game nights at standard times on the following dates;
Wednesday 5th January, 2011
Wednesday 12th January, 2011
40K in 40 Minutes is a fast moving fun tournament where games will usually take about 30 to 50 minutes. That would be 2 games per night with 4 games over the event with the winner to be announced after the end of the 4th round.
There will be a list up at the club this Friday (17/12/2010). If you are interested please put down your name. There will need to be at least 8 people to make this viable. Its a great way to try something new so come and give it a go.
The last Sunday in October is always when the Group North Open Day is held and this years event was run by Heinz Schroeder. This years event was a great success with plenty of demonstration games, try and play tables and large variety of items for sale. Heinz has promised a more detailed report and we will be sure to post this in the very near future. Many thanks to Heinz for his efforts and to all those involved. As pictures are sent to me I will also be sure to post them in the Photo Gallery and there are a few there now to give you an idea of how the day went.
Heinz has already brought our attention to the clubs 40th Anniversary which is in 2012 so now is the time to think of an idea to really showcase Group North.
Is was also certainly appreciated all those who came to the working bee on the day before. This was great for Heinz to help him set up and to make sure our club was well presented.
Our secretary James Luck has written a great piece on a recent tournament at Group North and can be found immediately below. Be sure to check it out - thanks James!
On of Group North's premier 40k tournaments has been announced for 2011. DAUTHUS is a 2 day event which is being held on the 5th and 6th of February and full details can be found on our Tournaments page.
I have also started a Calendar of Events 2011 page so if anyone has an event they wish to book in then be sure to send me an email.
Warhammer Fantasy Doubles Day
Held Monday 4th October at GNHWS
The Labour Day public holiday in SA was an ideal opportunity for the keen Warhammer players of GNHWS to get together for an all day session of team-play Warhammer. 7 members were divided into the Forces of Order or the Forces of Destruction, depending upon their preferred army. Seven different races were represented, Lizardmen, Empire, High Elves and Dwarfs for Order, and Skaven, Daemons and Vampire Counts for the Forces of Destruction.
The aim of the day was for every player to get at least 2 games of 3000 points in a team of 2, and as a bonus, a third game either as part of a pair (Forces of Order) or as a singleton in a 2000 pt game. There were no prizes up for grabs, just an opportunity to play in a team using the Alliance rules in the Warhammer 8th edition rulebook. Each player got half the points which when combined with their ally would make either a 3000pt or 2000 pt list. Most players hadn’t played too much 8th edition Warhammer, so the day was a great crash course in learning the rules and seeing how their armies faired against at least 3 other races, let alone when supported by another.
It was also great to see other members of the Club, including the VP, Heinz, pop in ‘just for a look’ to get a wargaming fix after a busy long weekend, or just to enjoy the spectacle of Skaven and Vampire Counts trying to get along, or Empire cannon shooting over the heads of their Lizardmen allies, instead of at them....
Features of the day included the sheer amount of fantasy terrain each game seemed to roll up, which really tested out player’s knowledge of the terrain rules, (and the rulebook index) and had varying effects on the way each game played and the feel of the battlefield.
Other highlights, as provided from the participants themselves:
· Kaz (VC) stealing 5 power dice via the Black coach to take it from level(1) to fully maxed out in one magic phase.
· A Helstrom missile volley landing in the middle of a zombie unit, hitting 33 then needing 2+ to wound/kill, and prompty killed the lot.
· John H's (High Elves) level 2 wizards miscasting, going nuclear with a double one on the miscast chart. Half of the unit she was in wiped out, and the one adjacent losing just enough for a panic check which they failed.
· John M’s (Empire) wizard sneaking through a lesser spell from the Lorel of Life which blasted the Vargulf for just enough wounds.
· Playing Warhammer all day in a fun environment (First game started 8:45 am and last game finished at 9 pm)
· Playing with and against different people, which showed Skaven + undead are very tough
Thanks to John Murray for some of the pictures and to all participants who helped make the day a fun day of gaming.
It has been a busy few months at Group North with plenty of things happening, including two major tournament. The first was Northern Heresy, a 40k tournament that has been on the calendar for a number of years now. Owen Bartsch has run another excellent event and has also been awarded the Presidents Award from this years President, Bob Leyssenaar. Full results can be found on our "Tournaments Results" webpage.
Sean Davis ran Group North's premier Wahammer Fantasy event - Crows Feast. This is Seans second running of the event and his efforts are greatly appreciated by all. Many thanks to the committee for funding the purchase of a new perpetual trophy after the old one was stolen during a hall hire.
Our club open day is this month on Sunday the 31st. Heinz is doing a great job of organising this years show so if you can lend him a hand then be sure to contact him ASAP. It should be a big event with plenty of demonstration gamers and tables. Plenty of items will also be for sale from the usual vendors too.
After our recent Annual General meeting we have a new committee and I am sure they will continue the great success Group North already enjoys.
You can go to the "Who we are" web page to find out who is on the new committee.
I have added in the results for Northern Heresy IV to the "tournaments results" web page and looks like it was a really fun event. With 30 players and many new faces I am kicking myself for missing that one.
Dominatus has also finished and congratulations to Owen Bartsch for winning that one. Lets hope we can get a few more club members in next years so that it builds up to a major calendar event for Group North.
Our next big event is Crowsfeast which is Group North's premier Warhammer Fantasy event. This is on the 4th and 5th of September. Check out the tournaments page for full details.
Firstly I would like to congratulate Mike Allen as our most recent winner of the Presidents Award. Mike has organised the Dominatus 40k tournament which is currently running and I have seen a large increase in the number of 40k games being played. We even had a new member join the club and along with paying his club fees he paid for Dominatus and played his very first tournament game that same night. Unfortunately the mighty Space Wolves soundly beat him but that hasn't stopped him from coming back for more. Well done to Mike for promoting Group North and gaming in general.
Mike has receive a $40 gift voucher from sponsor Phoenix Forge.
In April we had the clubs premier 40k tournament "Dauthus" and there was a great bunch of 28 players. Brad Barrett from Southern Wargamers was our TO for the event which left me free to play for a change. I would have to say that this was the best tournament I have attended to date as the atmosphere and friendliness of the players was fantastic. Full results can be seen on the tournamnets page and there are over 100 photos in the photo gallery. Congratulations to Tom Damin as this years winner.
I would like to thank those members who came and helped dig a trench after the mens toilets blocked up. We found the inspection points and once the plumber comes we should have no more problems. My appreciation goes to Ross Dawe, Dave Waldergrave and especially Heinz Schroeder and Rowland Dickinson for a top effort.
Next month is our working bee (26/06/10) and AGM (30/06/10). I hope everyone will consider a role on the committee as most of the current members will be taking a well earned rest. If you have any questions about what is involved then please contact myself or any of the other committe members.

The Redemption tournament was a great success with 34 players! Congatulations to Kristen Cann on his first place spot. You can check out plenty of pictures from the day on our Photo gallery page.
The next 40k tournament has now been opened for players to sign up for. This is Dauthus and at 2000pts its Group Norths premier event for 40k. I hope plenty of group North players will sign up for this one. With a new TO this means I will even get to play for a change!
This months President award goes to Matthew Lahiff. Many thanks to Matthew for getting a trailer and helping to pick up some more table tops. He then stayed a bit longer to help paint them too! Top effort to Matt and he has received a $40 gift voucher for Games Workshop.

In the far future of the galaxy there is endless conflict.
Armies and generals come and go and are soon forgotten, but once in every
hundred years or so a leader arises amongst one of the races that leaves
their mark for all time. In the annals of the Administratum of Terra, such
leaders are given the title of “Dominatus”. It marks a leader who has
mastered the art of war against all the races of the galaxy.

Welcome to 2010, I hope everyone had a happy and safe Christmas and New Years. Group North continues to grow with plenty of new members, 64 so far this financial year and I hope to see plenty more join in the next 6 months.
What makes Group North so successful? I fully believe that it is the diversity of members and their interests that make us the biggest gaming club in South Australia and probably one of the biggest in the country. We have a healthy mix of young and old members (and those inbetween); our members play a whole range of games from those set in the ancient past (Field of Glory) to those set in the far future (40k). There's WWII simulations with Flames of War and Dragons galore in Warhammer Fantasy; Blood Bowl is making a big comeback there are plenty more other games being played.
Group North continues to be financially healthy and has been able to regulary purchase new scenery, rule books, dice, measures etc - all for the benefit of members. At the last AGM we even managed to reduce fees!
The committee continues to do a great job and I thank each of them for putting in the time and effort to help run Group North. I also want to thank the members whom have pitched in during the year, many of them recipients of the Presidents Award to show our appreciation of their efforts.
So as President, what do I want to see in 2010? I am always happy to get a nomination for the Presidents Award to consider so keep sending them in. I would like to be sent some good pictures of your models - something I can post on the website as our background picture (which changes every month). Our club tournaments have been well attended by members in 2009 and I hope to see this continue in the new year. Most of all though, I want to see plenty of games being played on a Wednesday and Friday night.
This months award goes to John Murray. I would like to thank John for filling in as a Duty Officer at the last minute. John has received a $40 gift voucher from sponsor - Phoenix Forge.
Congratulation to Graeme Fazakerley who won the recent Blood Bowl tournament (North Bowl). Full details can be seen on the Tournaments Results page.
Ross Dawe has announced his tournaments for 2010. Ross runs some great events during the year so be sure to go to our Tournaments page to see what he has planned for the comming year. Thanks for the top effort Ross!
